Order of saving PDF pages as PNG or JPG

  1. Select one document in the PDF to Image Converter.
  2. Specifies a page range, such as All or 1,3-5. Processes up to 30 pages at a time.
  3. Select PNG or JPEG format and resolution.
  4. Convert to image and check the text, table, and rotation direction in the preview.
  5. Save individual files or the entire ZIP.

JPG and JPEG refer to the same format in this tool, with the extension .jpg. This is a function that turns the entire PDF page into an image, and is not a function that extracts only the original photo file contained in the PDF.

What is the difference between 72·144·216 DPI?

The default coordinate unit for normal PDFs is 1/72 inch. An unrotated 612×792pt page will render at 612×792px at 72 DPI, 1224×1584px at 144 DPI, and 1836×2376px at 216 DPI. When you double the resolution, the width and height are doubled, so the number of pixels approximately quadruples. Page rotation or the PDF's user settings may also affect the actual size.

This tool automatically scales to a limit of 3072px on the long side, or 8 million pixels total, to reduce memory usage. In large drawings, the actual resolution may be lower than the DPI you select. The DPI setting is a value that determines the number of pixels to be rendered; it does not mean that the print resolution metadata of the output image file will be stored at the same number.

Comparing PNG for small text and JPEG for photos

PNG stores rendered pixels losslessly, avoiding traces of lossy compression around small letters and lines. JPEG is a lossy compression and the tool has a storage quality of 85. It can help save space on photo-heavy pages, but it's not guaranteed to always be smaller than a PNG. Please enlarge and check not only the on-screen preview, but also the original downloaded size.

Renders the page background white. If the original is a low-resolution scan, saving it at high DPI will not restore missing character details. Magnification results may differ between PDFs composed of text and vectors and scanned images.

Text search, link, OCR and file size limits

Because PNG and JPEG are pixel images, they do not preserve PDF's ability to search and select text, click on links, or fill out forms. It also does not provide OCR functionality. If you need to keep text, consider splitting and extracting PDF to keep only the pages you need.

The original is less than 20MiB·150 pages, and the maximum number of pages converted to images at a time is 30. If the resulting image sum exceeds 150MiB, we clear the results and notify you of a failure. Please lower the page count or DPI and try again. The original file is not sent to the server, and only the library and font/character mapping files are downloaded from this site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does converting PDF to image reduce the size?

This is not always the case. Text-heavy PDFs can become larger if you create them with high-resolution images. Check the resulting number of bytes.

What should I do if the text in the PDF is broken or the pages look different?

Display differences may occur depending on fonts and special PDF configurations. Compare with the original and keep the original for important documents. You can select fewer pages or check again with a different browser.
